If you’re heading to Philander Smith College, get ready for the best days of your life! Why? Because Philander Smith College, located at 900 Daisy Bates Drive in Little Rock, Ark. is one place where students have the opportunity to learn how to live life to the fullest while preparing for a successful career in the classroom. The newly selected president of Philander Smith College, alumni, Johnny Moore, Ph.D., is there to make sure you experience education at its best.

High school students, you don’t have to wait until graduation to get a taste of college life at Philander.  With the federally funded TRiO program, the Upward Bound Classic Program (for Grades 9-12) and Upward Bound Math/Science Center (also for Grades 9-12) you can find support to succeed in your goal to get a good education. If you have never even thought about going to college because no one else in your family has ever gone to college; if you simply can’t afford to go to college; and if you have a disability, Philander offers programs especially for you. At Philander there is support for you through the channels of the academic world from middle school to graduate school programs.

Maybe you have been thinking about going to college and just haven’t made the effort to enroll? Now is a great time to take your thoughts seriously. As a new student at Philander, anxious feelings can be just for a fleeting moment. For the first time, in the history of the school, overnight student orientation programs are available throughout the summer for students who have been accepted to attend Philander. That’s right. Instead of going to the campus the day of classes, in one short day-before-trip or going back and forth to see and do what needs to be done to prepare for school, this year, students can stay overnight for a two-day student orientation session.

First-time students, you can find out what many of the students already know who attend this college. They know that Philander offers so many ways to receive the best results for the investment in your education that it could be harder not to achieve than to graduate. That is just how it’s done at Philander. Ranging from a series of lectures from famous, achievement focused speakers (Bless the Mic series) to the courses taught by devout educators; to the athletics of volleyball, basketball and track as well as student organizations, the educational experience available at Philander can be phenomenal.

So, what is Philander really trying to accomplish by offering students an opportunity to go to college? Well, the school’s mission is to produce academically accomplished students as advocates for social justice who are determined to change the world for the better. Couple that with the mission of Philander’s Think Justice Initiative “to cultivate consciousness, provide intellectual activities, and serve as a champion for social justice causes on the campus of Philander Smith College that will have an impact locally, nationally, and internationally,” the experience of community on and off campus is education at a much higher level.

While achieving in the academic arena, activities outside the classroom can add fulfillment to your overall college experience. Among the many different student organizations such as sororities, fraternities, the Black Male Initiative and Platinum By Design (for the ladies) is also available. There are competitive sports programs for men and women, mentoring programs, leadership programs and programs to plan programs.
