The volleyball and basketball tournaments of the season are coming to Little Rock at Philander Smith College, 900 Daisy Bates Dr. It’s the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) that is expected to bring some of the best athletic competition to the city. Sports fans can look forward to three days of contests between some top-notch athletic talents on display in the South.  The winner’s celebration started with a conference luncheon where Little Rock is already a winner by being chosen as the host city for this great sports event. Even Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola joined the celebration luncheon held at Philander Smith College to welcome the conference to the city. The sports competition is to be between the following colleges and universities: Philander Smith; Talladega College in Talladega, Ala.; Tougaloo in Tougaloo, Miss.; Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn.; Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla. and from New Orleans, Dillard University, Xavier and Southern University.

With the conference bringing such well known Historically Black Colleges and Universities to Little Rock for the volleyball tournament Nov. 7-10, 2012, preparation is already in the making. Plans were being finalized at the time of the luncheon and several sponsors are on board to support Philander as the college hosts the tournaments. Pam Brown Courtney, publisher of PBC, Inc. Presents Heritage Health Magazine, donated $10,000 toward the event. Other sponsors for the GCC volleyball Conference Tournament include the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau and the  Little Rock Hilton hotel. Sports fans can also look forward to the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments starting Feb. 28, 2013 at the Barton Coliseum. Sponsors for the GCAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Conference Tournament include the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Crown Plaza hotel.

As the community comes together to support Philander in what can be one of the greatest events of the year, it is clear that we are indeed “better together than we can ever be alone.”SM

Congratulations to Coach Thurlon (Sam) Weaver and Coach Tonya Isaac for a job well done. HHM
